Yep, I thought, "Doris Day, are you effing kidding me?" But the scene in which Jimmy Stewart's character gives her a sedative, then tells her of the kidnapping of their son, well . . . Day is very, very good - A great, emotional, believable scene from her.
As with all Hitchcock movies, I find that it loses steam about 3/4 of the way through, but the pluses outweigh the minuses, and the suspense is maintained. Yet another "wrong man in the wrong place at the wrong time" movie from Hitchcock, but again he proves that he's the master of pure cinema - it doesn't have to be 100% realistic filming, we just have to sympathize with the characters.
And with Jimmy Stewart and Doris Day as the EveryCouple, we do. Good stuff.
