Review of The Man Who Knew Too Little (1997) by Jesse O — 07 Oct 2011
Without Billy Murray this would have been a pretty terrible movie. Not that it's amazing WITH him either. Bill can make something even somewhat entertaining even if his heart isn't really into the project, as it seemed with this movie.
He has this thing when he doesn't really care for the movie he's working on, he tries so hard that it's almost obvious he's trying to keep himself entertained at all costs. And that's what he did in this movie really.
It works, in a way, until the last act of the movie when it just unravels and I just wanted it to end. There's also this improbable (yes...improbable for a movie where everybody is a dumbass, legit) dance scene that killed the movie for me.
There were so many events surrounding this dance that meant the dance had to go on, if this were real, for 30 minutes. It was so ridiculous watching this endless dance and these people didn't break a fucking sweat.
And it wasn't a slow dance, because that can at least go 30 minutes, but these people were fucking dancing like tonight was their last night on earth. And it really wasn't worth the payoff to watch Bill Murray act like a fool, so I just hated the scene and it made an average (but goofy and silly) worse.
I can think of worse movies, but I don't think this is really worth watching. Unless you want to see Bill Murray parody himself.
