Review of The Man Who Invented Christmas (2017) by Jason E — 23 Dec 2017
My wife will testify that I talked about this movie from the minute I came home till mid-day the next day (minus some sleep). I've always been a fan of a Christmas Carol, and for the record A Muppets Christmas Carol is my favorite, and I was excited to see a different take on the classic. What really made an impression for me is how revitalized the story feels, by having Scrooge interact with Dickens. Christopher Plummer is hilarious as Scrooge and really brings life to a character that could easily become an imitation in a lesser actors hand. The personal family issues of Dickens are what elevated this from just being a funny film and what left a lasting impression on me. A Christmas Carol, when handled well has a powerful and moving ending and this film though not having that end had a deeply moving ending on a smaller scale but no less powerful.
See it or Skip It:
I realize my love of the source materials influences how much I love this film but the story beyond that also makes it worth seeing.
