Review of The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) by James G — 25 Aug 2007
Bowie once described Nic Roeg as a warlock, and he certainly has a knack for capturing the aura of his leading men - he did it with Jagger in "Performance" and achieved it with 'Duke of LA'-era Bowie here, who is a perfect fit as the brittle, detached alien abroad in what amounts to a cryptic, heavily allegorical (visual and thematic allusions to the flight of Icarus, Jesus Christ and the fall of man abound) complex thriller, which is also a love story and a cynical portrayal of human corruption and greed and sinister political agendas.
Beautifully filmed throughout, and the camera loves Bowie.
