Review of The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) by Jarett B — 14 Jan 2008
SPOILERS AHEAD.
The Man Who Fell to Earth is a quiet film, I think, in the same way that 2001: A Space Odyssey is a quiet film. In that way it carries with it a sense of IMMENSITY, just as 2:ASO does. Seeing this visual thing is not "going to the movies and eating pop corn and enjoying a story", it is an experience that is languishing.
There are things that perplex me, just like 2:ASO. This makes me think even more that if this movie can do that to a viewer, then it must be on a comparable level to that great piece of cinema, or at least this is FANTASTIC sci-fi.
SPOILERS.
I don't understand the "time travel" he apparently experiences when looking at the field. Several times in the movie Newton (Bowie) sees things that no one else can, there's just a longing look on his face.
I don't understand what effect X-Rays have on him that relates to his contact lenses, or if there is a relation.
I don't understand who that other man was in the beginning, but I may have just missed something on this account.
I would watch it more than once, not for entertainment value, but to figure out just exactly what is going on.
