For me, the main thing that counts against this film is its length: the overall conceit is compelling, and David Bowie's awkward performance as Newton makes sense, but there's just a little too much silence and too much artsy 70s sex.
If I had to do some kind of film-school project, I'd try to edit it down by a good 40 minutes. But I don't imagine many people watch it these days for any reason other than to watch Bowie, and on that basis I wasn't disappointed.
