Review of The Man Who Cried (2000) by Miranda F — 27 Oct 2006
This movie really hit the spot.
Johnny Depp's portrayal of the gypsy on a white horse who deflowered immigrant Christina Ricci was wonderful. This was a wonderfully romantic piece of historical fiction. I want to go back and look at which actress played the child who grew up to be Christina Ricci's character - she did a marvelous job. I'm also curious whether Christina Ricci did the small bits of singing or whether it was a voice-over. If she did sing, I'm highly impressed.
Most surprising, because she didn't receive top billing, I guess, was Cate Blanchett. She's like a chimera. Every movie she's in, I don't realize it's her until about twenty minutes into it. She almost stole this away.
Wonderful, colorful, unpredictable, romantic historic piece.
Watch this movie, then run around humming Tom Petty's *Don't have to run like a refugee...*.
