Review of The Man in the Iron Mask (1998) by Alyssa N — 14 Oct 2009
I once read in an interview with Jeremy Irons that he admits to occasionally doing bad films because they pay the bills. That, in a nutshell, accounts for his presence, and probably the rest of the all-star cast, in this movie.
The first mistake was in trying to cram such a lengthy, detailed novel into a two hour film, which inevitably led to boring, two-dimensional characters, subplots that are introduced and ignored, and a story that jumps from point A to point B so fast that it forgets to convince us how it got there.
Yes, that means there are plot holes galore. But an over-ambitious director and poor pacing don't explain the awful script, full of cheesy dialogue that not even these talented actors should have been expected to pull off.
It had some fun moments that made me smile or laugh, but I think these parts only stand out when compared to the low quality of the rest of the movie.
