I couldn't tell you how faithful an adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' work this movie is nor how is compares to the other film versions out there but on its own merits it's not too shabby at all.

The story is interesting and really pulls you in, it's set in a fascinating time period and there are strong performances all around from the likes of John Malkovich, Gabriel Byrne, Jeremy Irons, Peter Sarsgaard, Anne Parillaud and Leonardo DiCaprio who was still at that stage of his career where he was better known for wetting teenage girls pants than for his acting and looked like he was 14 years old.

It can be pretty cheesy at times and I wasn't keen on the way Porthos (Gerard Depardieu) - one of the famous Three Musketeers - was played as the comic relief (does a film like this really need comic relief?) but overall I enjoyed it.
