Review of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015) by Jason S — 09 Jan 2016
In a year that has already had straight up spy comedy Spy, the latest Mission Impossible still in cinemas, and the next Bond entry rolling around before the year's out, The Man from UNCLE certainly has its work cut out for itself. Coolly helmed by gangster pic veteran Guy Ritchie, UNCLE looks the part, but unfortunately still can't shake off the feeling that it's the odd one out at the party in 2015.
To its credit, UNCLE works had at keeping its audience distracted with its charismatic leads, a few entertaining - but never amazing - set pieces and authentic production design. The plot flits between comedy and action thrills, never completely settling on one or the other, which is enough to keep the viewer on their toes. But only while the meter is running; UNCLE will struggle to remain memorable after it's done, but it passes the muster for a couple of hours of throwaway fun.
