Review of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015) by Tyler R — 05 Sep 2016
As I continue to impatiently wait for a third Sherlock Holmes film, Guy Ritchie has provided a very stylish and cool Cold War-era spy flick that hits all the right beats and provides a solid two hours of entertainment.
The Man from U.N.C.L.E. teams up an American and Soviet spy so they can track down a scientist before his work gets into the wrong hands. Similar to Ritchie's Holmes films, there is a big emphasis on style over substance, with the plot being fairly basic, and even a little confusing at times.
However, just like Ritchie's Holmes films, the style and the cast make up for it ten times over. The pairing of Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer is one that I never knew I wanted, but their interplay and chemistry is great, and it's a blast watching these two go at it physically and verbally.
As for the rest of the cast, Alicia Vikander is, yet again, very solid, and the supporting members are also pretty memorable. As for the plot and pacing, the story is basic, and things can get a little confusing at times, but it is all handled well enough that it never chases its own tail.
Ritchie handles the 60's setting just as meticulously as he did with Victorian England, covering everything from style to scenery, going so far as to cover the accents. He has a keen eye that fits period films quite well.
When the credits roll, and we get our new team together, the ending teases the possibility of a sequel. Hopefully, Ritchie can get a sequel or two out for this one.
