Review of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015) by Yuri B — 04 Jul 2017
I have to say, I'm surprised this movie didn't do better both critically and at the box office. I really enjoyed it! I never watched this TV show and didn't know anything about it, so I don't know how the film compares to the series, but the movie is pretty slick.
It's a spy thriller, action comedy, and a buddy movie rolled into one, and it's really fun. The plot is a little mundane and "been done", but it's elevated by the snazzy direction, humorous script, and its three charismatic (and incredibly good-looking) leads.
Also like the actors, the 60's era costumes, sets, and scenery are all gorgeous, the movie is eye-candy from start to finish. Guy Ritchie knows what he is doing behind the camera, and he really makes this film pop.
It is a tad too long with at least one too many endings, but it kept me interested throughout the duration, and the final ending is satisfying. The entire film is essentially the origin story for U.N.
C.L.E., and the end sets up the story for a sequel that most likely will not come, due to its mediocre box office haul. I'm kind of sad about that, I would have gone to see it.
