Review of The Man from Nowhere (2010) by Virman C — 28 Jul 2011
Quality Korean Action Revenge Film...comes out of nowhere.
This quirky Korean revenge film is brilliant. It starts off slow but the fight scenes alone make this a must-see for action seekers. The movie has odd characters, great fight sequences, adrenaline fuelled battles and a gritty story. It combines films like Taken, Bourne Identity and Leon and mixes them up Koran style.
Won Bin stars as the likeable Tae-shik, an ex Chinese Special Ops soldier with surprisingly clam quickness and ability. He befriends a young girl, who's mother is caught up in a seedy world of heroin and body parts harvesting. Tae-Shik , who is lying low in a pawnshop, gets pulled into a chase to free the captured girl and take down the crazy group of gangsters, who are also being sought after by the equally mixed Police Drug Squad.
The look of the film is dull, grainy and bleak, capturing the sleazy night-life underworld well for the first half lightening up later. The cast is a real mixture but is has 3 great leads at the helm. The story is creative, the action satisfying and the lead man is someone to route for. The film is quite long, slow to develop and like some World Cinema flicks a bit wacky and different.
The finale fight scene is amazing, complete with knives, a not so bullet proof car and eyes! ?? best line is 'you will see that the man who lives for today f**ks over the man who lives for tomorrow'.
