Review of The Man from Laramie (1955) by Martin T — 01 Jul 2010
A terrific Western with one major problem. The storyline is very well put together, clips along nicely and has some gripping drama. The problems that Stewart faces are compelling, and the resolutions are satisfying.
Lovely widescreen color photography. The film seems to have a racist bent at first glance, but reveals a more enlightened viewpoint on further reflection. A fine cast of characters, I especially enjoyed the hell out of Aline MacMahon as the spunky ranch owner Kate.
But there is one character that stuck in my craw: Dave (Alex Nicol). I know you're not supposed to like him, but fuck me, he's annoyingly nasty. Vic was a far more complex villain. Dave just really bugged me, he was too cartoonish.
But otherwise, a really solid and enjoyable movie.
