Review of The Man from Earth (2007) by Paul L — 15 Aug 2010
Five stars for the first half, which featured excellent characterization and psychological insight into the nature of memory and identity. Goes off the rails mid-movie for an explicitly anti-Christian plot twist that fails not so much for its deliberately blasphemous attempt at contentiousness as its utter irrelevance and triteness, but finally returns to its classic sci-fi roots with a second, completely unrelated plot twist, that could have served up all the pathos any movie needed, but ends up diluted by the intervening digression.
Strong acting and writing throughout, overall a success, but definitely a movie that gives too much play to the author's own obvious religious hang-ups.
