Review of The Man from Earth (2007) by Renee L — 26 Apr 2014
The script for this movie seems like it was written by an AP 12th grade Hitchens fan, because it is a piece of juvenilia at best. My viewing partner and I laughed at the dialogue because it was so predictable. Not only did the main character know van Gogh and the Buddha ("he was the greatest man I ever met"), he (wait for it... wait for it... wait for it...) WAS JESUS! Oh, barf. And guess what? As Jesus, his message got misinterpreted! He didn't really die; he just knew how to suppress the pain and how to *seem* dead. Then it became something he couldn't control when all he meant was for everyone to be kind. Of course, the straw Christian in the group declares this blasphemy (I agree) and just like Jesus (not) the main character takes it all back - he was just telling a story. See? Christians can't handle the truth. That's why they're Christians! It is better to just let them have their Divine Jesus and their flying spaghetti monster. Only we brave, intelligent atheists can handle the real truth. If science can't prove it, it can't be true.
After all, atheism isn't *at all* trendoid or simplistic. Only bother with this movie if you are in middle school and want to rebel against your Christian parents.
