Review of The Man from Earth (2007) by Jeph P — 26 May 2009
This is simply an amazing movie (I've seen it many many times). It's a very simple premise (a 14,000 yr old man), but the writer digs as deep as you could possibly go with that premise.
There's no special effect and little to no location/action or even acting for that matter. It is SOLELY dependent on its story and it's a mind-bending, philosophical, enlightening and wonderfully creative story. I LOVE that... it's like purposely restraining yourself from all the typical movie making tools which force you to be as creative as you possibly can be with the one tool you have left, the story. Trust me, limitations make you more creative. I do have some issues with the dialogue where the characters seem to flipflop a bit in opinion as they try to justify the story to each other, but it doesn't take away from the story as a whole.
I think everyone should watch it at least once in their lives (even if it is a bit of heresy :).
