Review of The Majestic (2001) by Aidan H — 17 Aug 2007
For a while, I thought that Jim Carrey had made a sequel to the Truman Show only this time in some bizarre Norman Rockwell-type America. Frank Darabont seems intent on taking us back to an era where James Stewart is President and Barbera bel Geddes is First Lady, where every high street looks like the one in It's a Wonderful Life and Frank Capra is still alive and well.
Just when you thought the mush-pot was about to overflow, the writers throw in some Disneyfied anti-McCarthyism for the final show-down. I don't mind the odd sentimental retro-oldie once in a while but this was unadulterated bollocks from beginning to end.
1 star for the costumes, cars and general production design. And Jim- get back to the funny stuff and give us all a break.
