Review of The Majestic (2001) by Mickaela C — 30 May 2008
"They don't make films like that anymore" is an over used saying that can in no way be applied to this movie...because they clearly DO!
Jim Carrey is a treat and proves that he is far less irritating when playing straight roles than he is in exaggerated comedy.
It is wonderful to also see Martin Landau (Cmdr Koenig from Space:1999) still being cast in strong roles.
This is a very emotional film, so be prepared with a box of tissues, and although glossy is beautifully shot using some classic lighting techniques (displayed even better in the 'film within the film') and even the score emulates Hollywood films of the 1940s/50s. I loved this movie for both it's artistic content and the fact that it strikes home on a variety of levels.
If you NEVER watch a Jim Carrey picture I urge you to give this at least ONE chance. I'm sure you'll be hooked.
