Review of The Majestic (2001) by Ben P — 14 May 2010
In The Majestic, Frank Darabont evokes the spirit of Frank Capra to tell his story of romance, finding one's self and patriotism. There's a small town where everyone knows everyone else. The diner, which has some of the best food.
Even a classic theater (one screen only). Some might say the movie's . . . (wait for it sis) enchanting. For the most part, it is. It's hard not to fall for this 1950s tale and its characters.
On the flip side though, the movie runs a tad long and doesn't exactly nail what its going for. It's all well-shot and acted, but the drama just sits on the screen instead of pulling you in. And after getting caught up with the small town and its people, the final act settles for a courtroom speech.
Despite all that, it's still a pleasant trip.
