Review of The Majestic (2001) by Gio H — 07 Oct 2007
A decent drama with a better than expected performance by Jim Carrey. He did a fine job in this film but the overall picture was an average one. There are some flaws in the story but some of the good stuff that is present can't overshadow some of those flaws. Without giving too much away, I felt there was a sense of awkwardness towards the end because I didn't believe the resolution was realistic. In addition, the film was unnecessarily long and it did drag at times.
However, the filmmakers did succeed in creating this small town mood that leaves the viewers satisfied only because you want the characters to succeed at the end and not because the story would in reality go this route. The townspeople easily 'jump on ship' as certain aspects of the story unfold and it felt force. Overall, this film would've worked better had there been some changes in the script and some cuts of the final film. It wasn't all bad though and if you ever see it playing on HBO or something then it would be a decent pass time.
