Review of The Maiden Heist (2009) by Kinnon P — 24 Oct 2009
Wonderful watching 4 very accomplished actors elevate a simple concept into something that can really make you smile. There's no huge emotional range being played here, just Walken, Freeman, Harden and Macy all just enjoying playing off each other. At it's core it's a fun heist movie, but there's a huge love letter to passion and art running through it that makes them easy to root for, and as good as Walken is Marcia Gay Harden nearly walks away with it as his glorious wife.
Light, entertaining masterclass in how acting ensembles can be superb, the story only really loses it's way briefly in the final act as there's no real satisfying finale to the heist overall, at least not one that's as much fun as what's gone before. Sure the material could've been weightier, but then we might not have gotten all of this delicate humour, something every player here excels at.
When you think of the body of character work these folks are responsible for then the movie actually creaks under the weight of the responsibility, but no-one lets you down, maybe with an even more intricate script there could've been a certified classic, but this is still a great example of making more with less.
