Review of The Magnificent Seven (2016) by Emma C — 08 Oct 2016
"The Magnificent Seven" is, above all, a straight forward fun time. While the film succeeds in giving us a few great characters that we care about, it's downfalls come when you look at the side characters.
The action in the movie is probably just about the most violent you can get with PG-13, maybe the most violent PG-13 movie I've ever seen (aside from Casino Royale, probably). Antoine Fuqua's direction is on point, and it's great having him work with Denzel Washington again.
Unfortunately, in the end, "The Magnificent Seven" doesn't focus on it's side characters enough, has a bare bones western movie plot, and has an underdeveloped villain who had the potential to separate this from other westerns.
On the upside, it has great performances from Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, and (in my opinion) Vincent D'onofrio. Nevertheless, I had a great time with "The Magnificent Seven" and I would highly recommend seeing it in theaters, or at least on home video.
