The 2016 remake of the 1960 classic film (Which itself was a reworking of a classic Japanese film by legendary director Akira Kurosowa.) is not classic itself, but it is very well made and acted and very entertaining.

Two time Academy Award winner Denzel Washington does well in the role of Sam Chisolm. The warrant officer/bounty hunter who is commissioned by the widow of a woman whose home and its citizens are being terrorized by a ruthless mining tycoon Bartholomew Bouge played by Peter Sarsgaard.

Chris Pratt is so-so as drunken gunman Josh Faraday. He is good here, but he has done better in other roles. The comic relief is provided by former "Law and Order: Criminal Intent" star Vincent D'Onofrio.

He gives the best performance of all of the hired guns. The script suffers from being a little formulaic. Chisolm and his hired hands pretty much overnight turn a bunch of farmers into excellent shots and elite fighters.

In the climactic battle all seems lost against Bogue and his men. Until a last minute miracle happens. Still despite the flaws the movie has enough positive points for me to give it a mild recommendation.

Denzel Washington is no Yul Brenner, but he does well here.
