Review of The Magnificent Seven (2016) by Phil H — 12 Dec 2016
I do love a good siege story. Home Alone, Swiss Family Robinson, Zulu, the original Magnificent 7...sieges always mean tension and fun. My problem with this re-make, as with the original, is that not enough of the seven survive to make it feel like a satisfying victory.
And the ones that do survive are the least developed characters, meaning even their survival doesn't balance out the sense of sadness and loss. Being a Western, you know the film is going to end with a ride off into the sunset but you wanted to believe that when it happened, they would be a newly formed band of brothers, bonded together by their heroic exploits.
Instead, you're left with more than half of them buried in the ground and the entire town ripped to shreds. I guess the story is what it is though and everything else about it is pretty well done.
