Review of The Magnificent Seven (2016) by Brett L — 20 Dec 2016
OK there is nothing new under the sun with this movie. We all know the plot so they don't spend a ton of time on character build up and there are only two albeit good and long, action scenes in the movie.
They even borrow lines from the original. Does all this make it a bad movie? Nah. It is entertaining, you know what you are going to get and you get your money's worth. Denzel Washington is the typical man in black good buy that goes all the way back to Lassiter in Riders of the Purple Sage.
Once he is on the job, you know that the weak will be protected and the wicked punished. The other of the seven make up a diverse group that appeals to a wider audience as well as allowing the director to utilize elements found in more modern style action movies (knife fights, automatic weapons, explosions, e.
G.) I did feel bummed when some of the seven did get killed so that says there is some characterization going on. and it was nice to see certain stereotypes broken (the lead was an African American who got respect and the the Southerner was not the ignorant racist are two that come to mind).
Really enjoyed it, will watch it again.
