Review of The Magnificent Seven (2016) by Dann M — 21 Feb 2017
The Old West gets politically correct in Antoine Fuqua's remake of The Magnificent Seven. When a robber baron threats a small town they hire a group of gunslingers to defend them from being runoff their land.
Starring Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Onofrio, Haley Bennett, and Peter Sarsgaard the film has a strong cast; though the performances are pretty mediocre. And the decision to diversify the seven, with a Mexican, a black, an Indian, an Asian, and a woman, stinks of political correctness and feels inauthentic.
Also, the relatively bloodless action takes away from the grit and intensity. Still, the fights are kind of fun and exciting, and are made even more so by James Horner's incredibly sweeping score.
The Magnificent Seven is entertaining and full of thrills, but for a remake of a classic it comes off as rather generic.
