Review of The Magnificent Seven (2016) by Brandon L — 23 Feb 2017
When you get something like an all-star cast together, it's nice when it's more than just a shallow shoot-em-up blockbuster. But if you like shallow shoot-em-ups, this one will do the trick.
It's a predictable premise with a predictable outcome, and the entire film rolls out predictably. Aside from that, there are tons of bullets flying, colorful characters, and only a precious few scenes of the beautiful countryside.
If it sounds like I wasn't a huge fan of this remake, that's not entirely true. It was fine. The only reason I can't give it a glowing review is because of what could have been. It could have been deeper. It could have been more scenic. It could have had a unique sense of style. Chris Pratt could have starred as someone other than Chris Pratt in a cowboy hat.
It's a fine movie for a rental and an acceptable excuse to eat popcorn and chill, I just wouldn't hurry out to buy it. Fans of the Western genre will find nothing new here to get excited over.
FAMILY FRIENDLY NOTES: Too much up-close violence for younger audiences. OK for older teens.
