Review of The Magnificent Seven (2016) by Bradley J — 02 Feb 2017
Magnificent? Try the 'Perfectly Acceptable". This remake is a traditional Western with all the lack of character development and mindless action sequences one could hope for. However, the film is buried under corny dialogue, sub-par performances and a paint-by-numbers narrative that never heightens the stakes enough to truly care for the characters.
The film clumsily assembles the seven in a quick, almost montage like gathering of the heroes and then just see-saws from unengaging talky scenes, to clippy battle sequences. The final climactic battle is fun for the most part and the overall film is rather enjoyable, but The Magnificent Seven does little to distinguish itself amongst other stronger, grittier Westerns.
Rating: 57.
