Review of The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) by Edgar C — 25 Aug 2011
When I go to heaven, I'll ask God to lend me His complete version of The Magnificent Ambersons before it was brutally amputated by "a lawnmower".
Welles is not to blame here; studios back in those times showed what they liked, so the reception of Hollywood in ceremonies and the (in)famous Academy reflected the censorship and taste imposed. The movie FEELS cut in several moments, and the climactic events depicted and the reflections towards the ending seem of a higher, even epic scope compared to the magnitude of the previous events. Deep inside, that hurts, and still the 88 minutes that remained were orchestrated beautifully, with a genious camera work and expert scenario handling.
So, yeah, I'll rate it with a perfect 100 in the afterlife.
99/100.
