Review of The Magdalene Sisters (2002) by John W — 19 Jun 2007
Almost perfect, though that's not to imply it's an easy ride for the audience. In fact, it's probably more squirm-inducing than recent "shock horror" pics. Director Peter Mullan presents an interesting case against the "organized religious establishment," but the attack somehow feels extended beyond Catholocism, to other portions of organized spirituality as well.
At the same time, he balances those themes with defense in the case of the modern church. See it to believe it-- both parts liberal and conservative, harrowing and breathtaking. A masterpiece!
