Review of The Madness of King George (1994) by Chris Z — 20 Jan 2008
Compelling rendition of Alan Bennett's play of the same name starting Nigel Hawthorne as King George and Helen Mirren as Queen Charlotte.
Like most of Bennett's work this is concerned first and foremost with how people's behaviour is affected by their social position. This film depicts the course of one of King George's bouts of madness that would ultimately lead to the appointment of his son as Regent. It is a rich and fascinating study of how the situation arose, developed and was finally resolved.
