Review of The Madness of King George (1994) by Kenneth L — 29 Dec 2008
I wonder if King George III, the king against whom we rebelled in the American Revolution, was really as gentle and kind as he is in this movie. Nigel Hawthorne gives a wonderfully empathetic performance as the king, playing him as an eccentric and lovable old man who sadly gets sick.
The rest of the cast, including Rupert Everett as the scheming Prince of Wales and Helen Mirren as the loyal and loving queen, give solid if single-note performances. The score is fantastic, because it is adpated from Handel.
The movie makes me glad that I live in the era of modern medicine and not back in poor George's time.
