Review of The Machinist (2004) by Daniel B — 27 Jun 2011
Well, I saw The Machinist last night. Great film. Here's my review (spoiler free, I promise).
Below is stuff that I feel parents need to know before viewing this movie (these are all out of 5 stars, 0 being not an issue, 1 being a slight problem, 3 being a mild problem, 5 being feels as if it's almost a constant issue).
Smoking--**** (4/5)- Bale is almsot constantly smoking throughout the film.
Alcohol---*** (3/5)- A few scenes are in a bar, but nothing too horrific.
Violence--**** (4/5)- When there's violence it's pretty graphic, a man getting his arm ripped off graphic. Other things include a refrigerator filled with blood and two hit and runs.
Sex--------*** (3/5)- There is about two minutes worth of nudity (topless woman). There is also an act of oral sex, a man and a hooker having sex (no nudity shown) in a bathroom stall, and implied sex with a hooker.
Language-*** (3/5)- Nothing so horrific that it could cause Fox News to mention it.
Terror-----*****(5/5)- First and formost this film is essentially a thriller/mystery so there is a few moments of suspense. Why did it get a 5? I'll refer you to a picture of Christian Bale from this movie. (WARNING- THIS PICTURE SHOWS A 110 POUND BALE [it's really disturbing]: HERE).
NOW TO THE REVIEW!
The movie is about Trevor Reznik (Bale), a man who has a seriously bad case of Icantgetanysleepbecausesomethinginmypastishaunting me Syndrom. He hasn't slept in one year. Like anyone with ICGASBSIMPIHM Syndrom, he starts seeing things. Anytime he is about to sleep his body snaps him out of it. That's actually all I can say without giving anything away.
On a whole this movie gets almost everything right. The acting, the great script, everything. The only one downside (somewhat) is that at one or two parts of the film the music is a bit overbaring. I really enjoyed watching it. It's on Netflix right now, so if your into great mysteries/thrillers I sugest you give it a go! 82 out of 100.
