If you were to think of it as a Merchant Ivory remake of A Beautiful Mind you wouldn't be far wrong.
This is an atmospheric costume drama. It makes interesting use of flashbacks and these combine with fine performances to give a real feeling of being transported. As a whole it has a finely judged disturbing and disoriented atmosphere.
