Review of The Lunchbox (2013) by Katherine W — 28 Dec 2013
Powerful yet underrated and subtle performances by the protagonists make The Lunchbox a gem of a movie. Irfan is at his usual classic best and brilliantly portrays the insecurities and loneliness of Mr Fernandez, the would be retiree preparing to hand over to his over-enthusiastic successor Sheik, played by the delightful Nawaz who holds his own against Irfan.
However the star of the show is Nimrat who brings out the fears and loneliness of a neglected housewife brilliantly and shows that her Cadbury smile isn't the only thing special about her. The magical city of Mumbai is a character in itself, a living backdrop to the heartwarming story with its ubiquitous dabbawalas and local trains.
It made me want to take the next train to Bhutan :).
