Going against the grain, I have to say that I thought this movie was pretty good. I have not read the book, so maybe that is why. Considering what this film is about, I think the surreal quality is a way to help us deal with the truly horrific story - the idea that when we die, there is something better waiting for us.
Ronan is remarkable as the narrator of her own story, and Tucci is scarily believable as a psychotic child molester. Thank god he got his just deserts at the end. The reason I liked this film, is because it isn't a story-book ending, where they find her body and he gets put behind bars - it is more realistic.
As for the effects, I thought they were beautiful, but can you really expect anything less than breath-taking scenery from Peter Jackson??!
