Review of The Lovely Bones (2009) by Simon O — 30 Apr 2012
Atrociously edited, often cliched cheese (swiss; for it is full of plot holes). Great performances from my favorite actress Saoirse Ronan, Mark Wahlberg and Stanley Tucci plus fantastic visuals are the movie's saving grace, but the sentimentality is tiring and the payoff at the end is one of the worst executed I've ever seen.
Boatloads of unnecessary characters, scenes and cuts. Also, did no one realize that the guy at the end who kissed her ghost (don't ask) would've been 18 or 19, and she would've still been 14? And if we're talking about problems with age, then it cannot be ignored that the grandma to a 14 year old girl is 35 years old.
That is not biologically possible. Of course, the age continuity issues are minor complaints, and just small examples of the lazy writing present here. Not even weepy housewives will enjoy this either, because of the horror element.
This is a prime example of bad editing killing a film.
