Review of The Love Guru (2008) by Anthony M — 17 Apr 2010
Mike Myer's 'The Love Guru' tries to accomplish to many things and while throwing celebrity after celebrity in your face, with barely any real funny jokes makes this a bit of a borefest.
The Love Guru is the story of Guru Pitka (Mike Myers) as he tries to bring a hockeys stars marriage back from ruin so they can win the Stanley Cup. And thats about it really...
The story is so lackluster that the only thing keeping this film moving was joke after joke, followed by a celebrity. This film seemed like it couldn't decide between sports comedy, Austin Powers-esqe or a romantic comedy. It was all thrown in and really not very well executed, the film was badly paced and me and my girlfriend found we were getting fairly bored by the end. I'm not saying I didn't find any of the film funny, I thought the Morgan Freeman voice over machine and the remote controlled magic carpet were hilarious but these were both done within the first 15 minutes, leaving the rest of the film to regurgitate jokes heard before.
One thing that annoyed me the most about this film was without a doubt the amount of 'famous faces' thrown at you. I'm not fan of celebrity culture that we live in and it seemed like Mike Myers was forcing them down our throats abit to much...especially considering NONE of them can act.
Maybe I knew I wasn't going to enjoy this as while I find Austin Powers somewhat entertaining, it still isn't all that great. This film was virtually Austin Powers but with a mighty fine beard and a robe. Boring, uninteractive and cliched to fuck!
