Review of The Lost World (1925) by Raynormanbateman . — 11 Jul 2005

[font=Courier New][i]The Lost World[/i] is the first silent film I saw. It has been many years since, and I?ve seen much better silent films than this. But this film still remains one of my favorite films. It may not be flawless, but in there is a really fun and adventurous film.

Now King Kong is one of my favorite movies of all time. Willis O?Brien, who did the special effects for [i]King Kong[/i], also did them for this movie as well. When you watch [i]The Lost World[/i], you will see a lot of similarities.

To most people nowadays, films like this aren?t worth seeing. While it is true that [i]Jurassic Park[/i] is visually more stunning that this film, I would rather watch this film over Jurassic Park any day. The reason is because films like [i]The Lost World[/i] (still talking about the silent one) have a better sense of imagination than the more realistic [i]Jurassic Park[/i].

Sure the dinosaurs don?t look real! But there is something about them looking like that, that makes films like this work. Imagine of there were CGI dinosaurs used to replace the stop motion ones. It wouldn?t work. It would look too real, and the film would lose it?s sense of fantasy.

There are some things that bother me, but most can be blamed on the times. I didn?t like that there is a man in black face in this movie. I understand that is something we can?t change, but it always makes me feel ashamed for film history for things like that.

But in the end, this is a great film. It isn?t the spectacle that [i]King Kong[/i] is, but it is still a good runner up. This film is easy to find at major chain places around malls and such. You can get it for under $7 is you look hard enough. It?s a good film to fork over a few dollars for. And who knows, maybe you will like it.[/font].
