Review of The Lost Weekend (1945) by Kelly N — 03 Jul 2007
Truly a dark film, with little letup from its depressing nature. However, the message it sends is crystal clear: alcoholism is a very real and very horrifying condition. I would be surprised to find ANYone desiring a drink after watching it, considering how dreadfully it is portrayed.
However, the plot itself was quite one-dimensional, and was undoubtedly made more to teach a moral than to entertain. The musical score was quite annoying, a cross between an old-time murder mystery and a sci-fi score.
There was, however, good acting, excellent filming techniques, and a darkly hard-hitting message which all make for a viewing experience that may not be "enjoyable" but certainly influential.
