Review of The Lost Weekend (1945) by Thomas N — 11 Feb 2009
With each billy wilder movie seen, I realize what a master he was. every film is somehow distinctly different, and yet retains that 'billy wilder' feeling. whether the story is slapstick, dark comedy, wrenching drama, or satire, he tells it entirely through the protagonist's perspective, forcing us to identify with the character no matter how damaged or tortured they may be.
jane wyman is wonderful, and almost manages to make me believe someone would endure a relationship with this destructive an alcoholic. employs the trope of 'the writer who writes the story you've just seen,' but imbues the story with a sense of 'public service' importance, so it's forgivable.
