Review of The Lost Weekend (1945) by Josè M — 11 Dec 2009
One of the first movies to explore the subject of alcoholism realistically, this film is superb. Up until this point, drunks were usually portrayed as laughable, staggering idiots used for light relief.
Not here. Lost Weekend shows the truly devastating and humiliating effects of alcohol addiction, complete with hallucinations and wibbly-wobbly sound effects from a theramin. Billy Wilder won Oscar for direction and the film itself won best film.
Must see.
