Review of The Lost City of Z (2017) by Kenny S — 19 Aug 2017
Not a good flick. I wanted it to end with the main character dying because he wasted my time throwing away his life and the love of a good woman, much like an alcoholic or habitual gambler, just for the discovery of some city that still to this day doesn't matter assuming it is based on fact. Obsession would get him divorced and unfunded. Instead the movie seems to suggest the funding was not a problem but when the going gets rough, it is always a handful of main characters versus the world of savages who never really give him any significant help as if the don't really give a care about what he really wants. Yes, I think if you are going to put us through this long of a emotional movie and not show us the city but just suggest they probably found it and leave it a we don't know what really happened kind of ending,... what are you really accomplishing? Wasted time to make a movie like this. It draws no real conclusions except to say life is a mystery and so is the end of these main character's lives. Dumb, inexperienced film making cannot be passed off as deep or thoughtful. Even the war scenes didn't make sense. "Our family is not here so lets just fight for the man next to you." Pretty much like saying we came all this way in the jungle, we might as well surrender and see what happens at the hands of these natives who never will help us because the city of Z is not a mystery to them and they don't care like we do.
I think the true story has a lot of sordid details we will never find out because of the shame or stupidity it would bring to light. I get more satisfying reaction to a crazy Marlin Brando who we know he is crazy in Apocalypse Now, instead of acting like this is a normal explorer who just never seems to get it right because his tactics are not sound.
