Review of The Lost City of Z (2017) by Movie M — 14 Oct 2017
Reviewed 4.21.17. On one hand, it checks off a lot of boxes......well written, well paced, well acted......but yet like the eponymous lost city of its title, something is absent. Perhaps it's the lack of a payoff in seeing the lost city itself.
Perhaps it's the lack of reasoning behind what drives the protagonist's obsession beyond petty insecurities and macho one-upmanship. Perhaps it's the sense that you aren't seeing anything truly new.
....just borrowed epic movie scenes patchworked into something familiar. Perhaps it's because I never dreamt I'd say the words 'Robert Pattinson delivers the most nuanced performance in the movie.
' All I know is that every time I thought it was about to take me somewhere, I felt back at the starting blocks again. But the mini-escapes it does provide are worthy movie viewing. And with such a vague and unsatisfying real life conclusion Gray deserves credit for conjuring a final act with substance.
