Review of The Lost City of Z (2017) by Thomas S — 08 Aug 2017

The Lost City of Z is directed and written by James Gray, and it stars Charlie Hunnam, Robert Pattinson, Sienna Miller, and Tom Holland in a biographical adventure about a soldier that explores the Amazon forest to find a lost city that he doesn't believe at first, but when he sees some pieces of the city, he starts to believe more of it and tries to get people to believe him, even though no one believes him, which gets him a bit obsessed about the city.

I have heard about this for the fact that it's a James Gray film, and he's well known in the fact that he makes films that aren't in many theaters, but are very much well reviewed by critics and viewers.

So with Brad Jones reviewing this movie, I'm curious to see this, and after watching this, I can definitely understand why. Charlie Hunnam is fantastic in this as the character could've easily be crazy towards his obsession of finding the city which would've ruin his character, and Charlie Hunnam doesn't go that far, and is more or less getting tired of people screwing him around in terms of finding the city.

Robert Pattinson is very subdued here, but it never was boring from him as he does a great job in this movie. The direction and writing by James Gray is stellar as I wasn't sure where it was going, and with a steady pace, I wasn't bored of the film.

The characters are very memorable, and even when the small characters like the main character's wife aren't in it that much, you still know enough of them that it doesn't feel completely useless.

I also thought that the ending was pretty well done because it doesn't give you clear answers about the situation, and it leaves for interpretation which works as we don't know just as much as the people that aren't in the forest.

The Lost City of Z is a fantastic film that I probably won't mind seeing James Gray other films.
