If you don't have (or worse: if it suits you not to have) new ideas, parody the old ones. In adventure cinema, perhaps this current trend began with the movies with "The Rock", and "The Lost City" does not deviate from such approach by adding to it a metareferential element: the love story between the couple of protagonists has the upper hand over the adventure just like in the novels written by the character of the 57-year-old Bullock. So in in essence it's a normal romcom but disguised as who knows what (a suggestion: Zemeckis).
