Review of The Lords of Salem (2013) by Brandon S — 03 Sep 2013
A far departure from Rob Zombie's previous films... which is in part why I liked it. This film proves Zombie is a creative genius. Lords of Salem is an atmospheric creepfest. Filled with insane and terrifying imagery but that is also oddly enough surreal and beautiful.
The film is a homage/hybrid of The Omen, Rosemary's Baby, Stanley Kubrick's The Shining and Jacob's Ladder. It's not particularly scary, just weird, creepy and disturbing. Dee Wallace (The Howling), Patricia Quinn (The Rocky Horror Picture Show), Judy Geeson (To Sir With Love) and Meg Foster (They Live) are all fantastic in this.
I was very entertained by this movie and impressed with Zombie's apparent growth as a director. I would say this and The Devil's Rejects are his best. Lords is very different though, so don't go in expecting your typical Rob Zombie film.
I expect this to eventually become a horror cult classic and B-Movie favorite in later years.
