Review of The Lords of Salem (2013) by William W — 19 Apr 2013
A what the fuck did I just see film, the likes that mainstream cinema hasn't seen for decades. While Zombie is still obviously in love with 70's and 80's exploitation; with this more mature film he expands his cinematic references to include Kubrick (The Shining, Clockwork Orange,) Polanski (Rosemary's Baby, The Tenant) and most obviously Ken Russel (circa Lair Of The White Worm.
) A slow burn of a movie, one hasn't seen such deliciously demented scenes (such as flesh burnt priests masturbating day glow multi-colored dildo's and Sheri Moons birth of a tentacled spawn of Satan to name just two) in a cinema in a very long time.
I'm torn about Sheri Moon, either she's indeed perfect for the role or the film, but somehow I think the film may have been stronger with a more accomplished actress. The film has a plethora of wonderful supporting roles; Ken Foree (Dawn of The Dead) Dee Wallace (The Howling) and most importantly Patricia Quinn (The Rocky Horror Picture Show) all show how much respect Zombie has for the horror movie genre.
Not a film for everybody, but for some a must see.
