Review of The Lords of Salem (2013) by Kristy E — 06 Sep 2013
The first hour is so engaging that for a split second I actually had hopes that Zombie was going to let the plot play out in a more typical fashion, knowing all the while he would not. As it is, this film would be extremely effective playing on multiple televisions during a kick-ass Halloween party.
The visuals are nightmarish, macabre, perfectly crafted, and exactly the type of morbid creativity that unapologetically and permanently burns images into your brain. Zombie is undoubtedly twisted and talented, but if I wanted to get my horror kicks from a series of abhorrent visuals and ominous music, I'd watch old Tool music videos.
With a terrifying plot that doesn't come full-circle, I finished the movie thinking "it could have been so much more". I'd like to think that that's what Zombie was going for, but I have to wonder if that's the extent of his current abilities.
